Mercado Santa Ana

Mercado Santa Ana is Estepona's main gastronomic market — several stalls and bars under one roof. A good choice when your group has different tastes or you want to sample a few different things in one sitting.

Located in the centre, a few minutes' walk from both the old town and the seafront. Lively atmosphere and none of the formality of a sit-down restaurant.

Quick ideas

If you don't have time to decide

1

I want to eat espetos on the beach

Head to any chiringuito along the promenade. The beach bars between La Rada beach and El Cristo beach are the closest to the town centre.

2

I want to eat well without spending much

Tapas bars in the old town (La Lonja, La Goleta, Casa del Rey) offer the best value. Under €20 per person for a proper meal.

3

I want a romantic or special dinner

El Palangre at the marina or La Capilla Gastrobar in the centre are the top choices. Book ahead in high season.

4

I have children and need something easy

Restaurants along the promenade or at the port are the most family-friendly. La Rada or La Taberna del Puerto have space and a relaxed atmosphere.

5

We're a group with different tastes

Mercado Santa Ana is the best option: several stalls in one space, everyone chooses what they want.

Before you go

Things worth knowing before eating in Estepona

Book ahead in high season

In July and August the best restaurants fill up. If you have a specific plan, book at least a day in advance.

Almadraba tuna: April to June only

If you're visiting in spring, don't miss the almadraba bluefin tuna. It's the finest seasonal product on this stretch of coast and only available for a few months.

Estepona is cheaper than Marbella

Prices in Estepona are noticeably lower than in Marbella or Puerto Banús. The difference is especially clear with tapas and set lunch menus.

The old town is walkable from everywhere

The historic quarter is less than 10 minutes on foot from both the promenade and the port. Lunch in the centre, then a walk to the sea — no car needed.

Many beach bars close in winter

A lot of chiringuitos only open in high season or at weekends. If you're visiting out of summer, it's worth calling ahead.

Estepona has its own fishing port

Fish served at restaurants near the port can come straight off the boats that same day. It's the most direct route from sea to plate.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about eating in Estepona

Some of the most recognised are El Palangre (Michelin Guide 2019), La Palma (open since 1964), La Rada and La Bulla Gastrobar. The best choice depends on what you're looking for: for fresh fish, restaurants near the promenade or port are the top option; for tapas with a local atmosphere, the old town is the place.

Estepona has its own fishing port, which guarantees fish straight from the boats. The best places for fresh fish are El Palangre, La Escollera (right next to the fishing port), La Palma and La Rada. Espetos (sardines grilled on bamboo canes) and seasonal almadraba tuna are the most iconic dishes.

El Palangre was featured in the Michelin Guide 2019. It is the most prestigious gastronomic reference in the city, specialising in rice dishes, seafood and produce-driven cooking at the marina.

Estepona's beach bars stretch along more than 20 km of coastline. Espetos — sardines grilled over wood embers — are the signature dish. Outside peak season, it's worth calling ahead as many only open in summer.

In summer and at weekends, it's recommended to book at the more popular restaurants, especially El Palangre, La Capilla Gastrobar, La Bulla and La Rada. For tapas in the old town, you can usually walk in without a reservation.

The historic quarter concentrates the best tapas bars: Casa del Rey (wines and pintxos), La Lonja, La Goleta and Taberna Diez are the most visited by locals. Tapas culture is particularly strong in Estepona, where quality and value are better than in other spots on the Costa del Sol.

Estepona's gastronomy revolves around the sea: espetos, seasonal almadraba tuna (April–June), fresh anchovies in vinegar, salt-baked fish and marinero rice dishes. Inside the old town, the emphasis is on seasonal tapas, pintxos and local wines.

The seafront promenade and the port are the best areas for fish and seafood with sea views. The old town is the best area for tapas, local atmosphere and Mediterranean restaurants. Mercado Santa Ana brings several food options together in one space.

Mercado Santa Ana is Estepona's gastronomic market, with several stalls and bars under one roof. It works as a food hall — a good option when your group has different tastes or you want to try a few different things in one sitting.

Estepona is noticeably cheaper than Marbella or Puerto Banús. You can eat very well for €15–25 per person on tapas or a set lunch menu. Top restaurants may cost around €35–55 per person with drinks. Beach bars are mid-range.
