It is not the nearest airport, but it is the one with the flights. There are three ways to cover the last stretch from here, and none of them makes you change vehicle.

How to make the trip

  1. By bus, no change needed

    Some Avanza lines leave from the airport itself, from the Arrivals stop opposite the transport interchange, and end at Estepona bus station. They stop along the way, in Marbella among other places, but you stay on the same bus. Not every Málaga–Estepona bus calls at the airport: check that yours leaves from there.

  2. By taxi or pre-booked transfer

    The official taxi rank is at Arrivals, ground floor. If you would rather be met at the exit, book a transfer before you fly. We do not publish fares: they change and we have no source that fixes them.

  3. By hire car

    The hire companies are at the airport itself. The fast route uses the AP-7 toll motorway; the coastal A-7 is free and feels the summer traffic more.

When you arrive

The bus drops you at Estepona bus station, on Avenida del Litoral, next to the Palacio de Congresos and about 3 km from the centre by road. There is a taxi rank right there.

Search for Estepona and Málaga airport and you will get 40 miles, 64 km, 80 km and 85 km, all at once. It looks like someone's mistake and it is not: they are two different questions that nobody separates.

The one that matters if you are driving or taking a transfer. The coast curves, which is why it is twenty kilometres more.

Our figures come from measuring, not from picking the most repeated one: we geolocated every point on OpenStreetMap, calculated the fastest route with an open routing engine and the straight line with the haversine formula, always from the same origin — Estepona town hall — and on the same day. What we do not publish is the time: a routing engine returns a model with no traffic, and in August that looks nothing like reality.

Which airport suits you

Estepona sits between two airports, and the useful question is not which one is closer but which one you can actually get here from. Distances measured from Estepona town hall along the fastest route.

    Not the closest, but the one with the flights. If you are flying into Spain from abroad, this is almost certainly where you land.

    Half the distance of Málaga, and still rarely the answer: it serves far fewer destinations and crossing the border adds time of its own.

By train

Estepona has no train station

And it is worth saying in full: it is not just that the station is missing, no railway line runs through the municipality at all. Arriving in Estepona by train always means getting off somewhere else and finishing by road.

    On the Algeciras–Bobadilla line, with a thin service. Closest in kilometres and almost never the most practical.

    about 64 km by road

    The terminus of Málaga's C-1 commuter line. Useful if you are already moving along the coast, not for arriving from far away.

  • Málaga María ZambranoThe high-speed one

    about 88 km by road

    The farthest of the three and still the answer if you are coming from Madrid, Córdoba or Barcelona. This is where the high-speed trains stop.

The nearest station is not the one you would guess: in kilometres, San Roque-La Línea to the west wins. If you are coming from Madrid you are still better off at María Zambrano. We do not give frequencies or timetables because they change.

The station and who runs the buses

Where the station is

On Avenida del Litoral, next to the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos: east of the centre, about 3 km from Estepona town hall by road. This is the address the operator publishes. If you read that it is west of the old town, it is not: it is east.

Who runs them

Town buses are run by Avanza. Intercity and long-distance services are run by Avanza, with the Málaga–Estepona route and some lines leaving from Málaga airport, and by ALSA, which keeps a ticket desk at the station. For timetables and tickets, go straight to them.

We name them the way the operator that runs them does. You may see the same lines called L1 and L2 elsewhere: that is another company's naming.

Who to call and where the ranks are

We do not publish fares: they change without notice and we have no source that fixes them. What is stable is who to call and where to find a taxi without phoning.

This is the number for Radio Taxi, the Estepona taxi drivers' association: almost the whole local fleet belongs to it. Hailing a taxi in the street is not common practice; the normal thing is to phone or go to a rank.

By car

The free A-7 and the AP-7 toll road

You reach Estepona along the coast, and there are two ways to do it. The A-7 is the coastal road and it is free. The AP-7 is the toll motorway and the fast one: the quickest route from Málaga airport uses it, which is why our figure of about 84 km is for the tolled itinerary.

We do not give the distance on the free A-7: we could not measure it with the same method as everything else, and a figure obtained another way would not be comparable. What is solid is this: the difference between the two is less about distance than about time, and in summer the coastal road's traffic shows.

You cannot get all the way by train: you get off somewhere else and finish the journey by road. The three options are San Roque-La Línea (about 44 km), Fuengirola, the end of the C-1 commuter line (about 64 km), and Málaga María Zambrano (about 88 km). Málaga bus station, where the route to Estepona leaves from, is next to María Zambrano.

By crossing the border into La Línea de la Concepción. From there, by taxi or car along the coast, or on an Avanza bus from La Línea bus station to Estepona's. It is about 45 km by road from the airport.

Both are available. The coastal A-7 is free and the AP-7 is a toll motorway. The fastest route from Málaga uses the AP-7, and our figure of about 84 km is for that tolled itinerary. The real difference between the two is less about kilometres than about time and summer traffic.
