Virgen del Carmen Procession
The bearers of the Virgen del Carmen walk into the sea waist-deep while the fishing boats surround the image. The most moving scene of summer in Estepona.
The procession of the Virgen del Carmen is the most anticipated moment of summer in Estepona. On 16 July, the image of the Virgen is carried by bearers from the city centre down to the sea.
When the bearers reach the shore, they don't stop. They walk into the water up to their waists with the image on their shoulders. From the sea, the fishing fleet's boats form a circle around the procession. The seafaring community sings La Salve Marinera. It is a completely genuine scene — not designed for tourists, though any visitor who sees it doesn't forget it easily.
The fishing families have been at the heart of this procession for decades. The connection between the harbour, the fleet and the image of the Virgen del Carmen is part of Estepona's maritime identity — a city with centuries of important fishing history.
This is not a tourist procession. The fishing families remain at the centre of it. A visitor who arrives with no expectations leaves with something they won't find at other coastal processions.
