11th Orchid and Collector Plant Fair
The eleventh orchid fair next to the Orchid House: stalls of orchids, carnivorous plants, bulbs and succulents on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October, with workshops and the premiere of 'Escuchar lo invisible', an installation in which orchids make music.
On Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October, Calle Terraza fills up with plants. The 11th Orchid and Collector Plant Fair is set up outside the Parque Botánico-Orquidario, with plants on show and for sale, and walking around the stalls is free.
Nurseries and collectors come from all over Andalusia and beyond: orchids from Pantropica, Flora del Trópico and Uniquplant; jewellery made with orchids from Eternal Flower; carnivorous plants from Carniloco; South African bulbs from Todoplant Bulbosas; succulents from Suculovers, and kokedamas, the moss balls with a plant inside that you hang up or set on a dish.
Inside the Orchid House there are workshops: an introduction to growing orchids on Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 am, and carnivorous plants on Saturday at 5:00 pm. They are included with the Orchid House ticket (€5; €3 for pensioners and people with disabilities), there are 50 places and booking is required at info@orchidariumestepona.com or on 951 51 70 74.
On Sunday at 10:00 am, 'Escuchar lo invisible' (Listening to the invisible) opens: an audiovisual installation that will stay at the Orchid House for good. Sensors read the bioelectrical activity of living orchids and turn it, in real time, into music and images. It is the work of Alejandro Fernández, of Molino Lab (Salamanca), as part of his 'Sinfonía Biótica' project.
A weekend morning plan: the stalls outside, the Orchid House's glass dome inside and the old town five minutes' walk away.
Orchids to take home, carnivorous plants for the children and plants that make sound: the Orchid House steps out into the street for a weekend.
