On Sunday 22 November 2026, at 6:00 pm, the Teatro Felipe VI in Estepona hosts a performance of 'La Revoltosa', one of the most popular titles of the Spanish género chico tradition, as part of the theatre's autumn programme.

The action is set in a Madrid tenement courtyard at the end of the 19th century. Felipe prides himself on being the only man in the courtyard who resists the charms of Mari Pepa, whom the other women consider a born seductress: the plot's tangle grows out of that tug-of-war between denial and feelings neither of them will admit out loud.

'La Revoltosa' premiered on 25 November 1897 at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid, with a libretto by José López Silva and Carlos Fernández Shaw and music by maestro Ruperto Chapí. Alongside 'La verbena de la Paloma', it is considered one of the masterworks of género chico, and its score — whose orchestral prelude is often performed on its own in concert programmes — is among the most admired parts of Chapí's output.

A Madrid zarzuela from 1897, still on stages more than a century later, arrives in Estepona as part of the Teatro Felipe VI's autumn season.
