About this place

Castillo el Nicio is one of the oldest testaments to Arab occupation in Estepona's territory. Built in the ninth century on top of the Padrón Alto, its position commanded the coastline and the routes inland. Its historical importance is tied to the figure of Omar ibn Hafsun, the warlord who in the ninth and early tenth centuries led a prolonged rebellion against the authority of the Emirate of Córdoba from his base at Bobastro, in the mountains of Málaga. Castillo el Nicio was one of the positions that featured in this territorial struggle. The emirate's forces captured it definitively in 923 AD. From the original fortress, the walls and several towers survive, accessible from the Padrón Alto.

Castillo de San Luis, from the 16th century, stood in the town centre. The seven watchtowers watched over 21 kilometres of coastline. Three layers of defence on the same territory.
