José Carrión y Marfil was born in Estepona in 1747 and, after studying law and being ordained a priest, crossed the Atlantic as vicar general to the archbishop of Santa Fe de Bogotá. He served as auxiliary bishop of Santa Fe, bishop of Cuenca (present-day Ecuador) and bishop of Trujillo (Peru) for 26 years, before returning to Spain to lead the abbey of Alcalá la Real until his death in 1827.
