The Estepona native who led a mutiny against Chilean independence
Born in Estepona in 1747, he killed a man in a duel, was exiled to Chile as a common soldier, and ended up leading the last armed attempt to stop Chilean independence. The mutiny cost him his life.

Tomás de Figueroa Caravaca was born in Estepona in 1747 and arrived in Chile in exile, after killing a rival in a duel in Spain. He rose to colonel in the colonial army and, on 1 April 1811, led the «Motín de Figueroa», the first military uprising against Chile's independence process. He was captured and executed the same day.
