Castillo de San Luis
A sixteenth-century castle at the heart of Estepona's historic quarter. One of its walls still defines the edge of Calle Castillo. The cartographer Pedro Texeira illustrated it in his Atlas del Rey Planeta in 1634.

About this place
The Castillo de San Luis is the castle that visitors walk past without knowing they are doing so. It stands in the historic quarter — Calle Castillo names it directly — and one of its walls is still a visible part of the urban fabric. It was built in the sixteenth century, during the period when the Castilian Crown was reinforcing the defences of the Andalusian coast against Barbary raids. In 1634, the cartographer Pedro Texeira included an illustration of Estepona in his Atlas del Rey Planeta. In that drawing, the Castillo de San Luis is clearly visible as part of the town's skyline. A plaque on the wall reproduces that drawing today, alongside a sonnet by José Antonio Bermúdez, a physician born in Estepona. There are no guided visits to the interior. The wall itself is accessible from the street.

Castles and towers: a coast always on watch
For centuries, Estepona had a defensive system of two castles and seven coastal towers. Castillo el Nicio, of Arab origin from the 9th century, dominated the interior from Padrón Alto. Castillo de San Luis, from the 16th century, stood in the town centre. The seven watchtowers watched over 21 kilometres of coastline. Three layers of defence on the same territory.

Seven watchtowers on permanent alert
From the 16th century, Estepona's coast was defended by a system of seven watchtowers that warned of Barbary corsair attacks. They still stand today, spread across 21 kilometres of coastline, and are one of the most singular pieces of heritage in the region.
